HARRY MOTTRAM CUP DRAW. – 2ND ROUND LATEST

Barring acts of god, the second round draw will take place at the Memorial Stadium tomorrow – Friday 9th November.

Geoff Twentyman will preside over the draw, aided by myself [Russ] and our esteemed Chairman, Mike Akers.

The draw will then be broadcast to an expectant sporting nation on Geoff’s BBC Bristol show tomorrow afternoon. – he thinks between 6-7pm, during his sports section.

Do let all your players know to tune in and listen.

The draw should be available on YouTube directly after – I will email the link tomorrow when the production company have put the lavish TV spectacle to bed.

Hopefully it’ll be a giggle. I have asked him to recap the first round results so that every club is mentioned for posterity.

Netball report thus:

The Div 11s took on second-in-the-table Elevation this morning and were beaten 28-10. Our defence was strong in the circle but we struggled to get the ball up the court on a few occasions (all good stuff to work on in the future!) Our attack played the ball around their circle well and make some great shots under pressure from experienced opponents. Misty was awarded the double player vote from us and Elevation for taking on an excellent shooter and providing good support in the defensive third. With a few tweaks we’ll be in with a good chance come the rematch in February! x

Well the A’s lost their match too, 41-43 to DHT which doesn’t sound that bad but we should of kicked ass. Disappointing performance and we have all given ourselves a stern talking too. Vernie however, got double whammy player of the match! x

Downs A beat Clifton Rockets 3-4.

Downs B’s match with Cotham Old Boys was pesponed.

The Suburbans lost 0-1 to Old Georgians

We also have a late match report from last Tuesday’s Indoor Cricket League match:

Well here it is, the extremely belated match report from last Tuesday.

The Cowboys took on the Housing Pirates. In many respects this was a classic Cowboys encounter. How does a classic Cowboys encounter start? With a player not turning up of course. Sir Matt Davey “the absent” let us down (we are yet to hear of the health of his cat) but we were able to enlist the help of the usual umpire John who was just there to watch.

RT2 lost the toss for the second successive week (and is going to write this match report as if he is someone else so he can keep his editorial air of subversive insubordination) which of course makes him a crap captain. This time, however, he was lucky enough to get what he wanted anyway and the Cowboys were put into bat.

Tom and the debutant Simon were asked to open. Tom got us off to a flyer and retired inside of 3 overs after smashing 3 sixes in an over. Remember when I said this was a classic Cowboys performance? Well what comes next? A batting collapse of course. We lost Simon, Alfie and John in quick succession to bring RT2 to the crease. After a brief, far from chanceless knock, he too was sent back. Iggy and Garner provided some brief entertainment as did Tom on his return (finishing on 30). The Cowboys made 91.

RT2 and Garner opened the bowling and, to everyone’s surprise, it all went rather well. RT2 even took a wicket. Garner was the real hero though with figures of 3 – 14. with some good bowling from Iggy and John the Pirates were bowled out for 64.

Much fun was had by all. Well done Cowboys.

P.S. There have been some vicious rumours about a game the Tuesday before last. Apparently a team closely resembling the Cowboys turned up and gave the opposing side 90 extras and lost by about 80 runs. It couldn’t have been us because I would remember that… though… I don’t remember what I did that Tuesday and I have been waking up screaming in cold sweats with flashes of men with outstretched arms (though I’ve been having dreams similar to that since I was little – long story, don’t ask).

As queers, feminists, anarchists, punks, activists, performers we stand in solidarity with their actions, and we will continue to support them as they fight for freedom from the prison walls of a penal colony and a repressive nation state. Arrests, detention, court hearings, legal representation and campaigning costs lots of money – all profits from this event will be donated to their ongoing struggle.

INCENDIARY HIP HOP BAND MAKE THEIR BRISTOL DEBUT AT SPECIAL TRINITY GIG: Sat 27th October

Influential hip hop act The Coup make their Bristol debut this month, as part of a short UK tour, their first since forming in the early 1990s.

The event is a fund-raiser to set-up a fund for helping local activist groups/people put on events etc.  The Trinity event on SATURDAY 27TH OCTOBER features an evening performance with a full live band, as well as a FREE daytime gig for Under 16s at 5pm.

Not heard of the Coup? Where have you been? Next to Public Enemy, they are probably the best known political hip hop band in the world. The group first exploded on to the scene in 1993 with their debut album Kill My Landlord, a beautifully subversive blast of hip-hop that utilized Boots Riley’s gifted wordplay and addressed topics ranging from racism to police brutality and class warfare. Described as one of the “10 most influential people” by Vibe Magazine, Riley has collaborated over the years with Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Atari Teenage Riot and more. He is a prominent figure in the Occupy Movement, participating in actions and speaking out throughout the world.

The Trinity event also features up and coming Bristolian rapper Buggsy and UK hip hop legend DJ Skitz. At a recession-busting £10 this represents unbelievable value for money. For both Bristol’s legion of hip hop heads, and anyone interested in the ideas behind the Occupy Movement, this is a gig not to miss.

Tickets available at Bristol Ticket Shop Ticketweb Skiddle

Bristol Record Shops: Idle Hands (Stokes Croft), Rise Records (Queens Rd., Clifton), Cooshtie (Park St. Clifton), Genesis (Stapleton Rd. Easton)

There will be some in the Plough, Easton this week as well.

This is going to be a great gig and a rare chance to see one of the best revolutionary Hip Hop bands around.

Netball report thus:

A really good game of netball from the Toos this morning – we enjoyed it and everything! We lost though – 28-47 to Culverhay Cougars BUT for the first 3 quarters we were behind at one point by only 3 goals and they had to work hard. They pulled away from us in the 3rd quarter with some seemless shooting and interceptions. Cat got player from them and Emma from us (although she thinks we voted for her because she hadn’t got it before – we didn’t, we voted for her cos she was ace!). Anyway, come back Captain Rach, we miss you!! xx

Downs 1 drew with 6-6  DAC Beachcroft.

Downs 2 loast 2-3 to Clifton St Vincents A.

The Suburbans drew 3-3 with Ashton United.

The Ultra Casuals produced a shock result beating Division 2 Redland Ramblers 2-1 in the Cup.

The Casuals Beat Russell Athletic 9-1.

The Tuesday training before the game was an upbeat, quick, more aggressive game as was the previous Tuesday before the last match.

Nerves came for me on Friday night on the way down to the inlaws in Devon. The boys were playing up in the back of the car as usual and managing to press the mental buttons only children in the back of the car can. All I wanted to do is get there, eat my tea and crack the first bottle of red.

How could I think about my team speech with fart noises going on in the back, followed by screaming fits of laughter?

“I’m trying to think about my speech for the team on Sunday blah blah blah… shut it.”

They’re getting old enough for a sarcastic “whoooooooooo…arc at ee” though.

Anyway, we got there and the red was opened, followed by chat and chat and chat.

However I couldn’t  escape the reality of the game Sunday morning. Nothing could shift the nerves, worry about any late call offs from the players and whether I had picked the correct squad.

We got dumped out of the cup early the last 2 years and there are mutterings of us doing well, along with a book being written if we reach the cup final, by Eddie Bridges.

He has since qualified “It’s gonna be more of a pamphlet.”

I think it’s something about Matt Le Tissiers’ rise to glory and “My part in that.” (EB). Not sure.

Or was it “How I created the Cowboys”. Who knows. However the pressure was on as the whole squad were up for it.

But as you can see, in hindsight,  there was nothing to worry about.

It was hard to pick man of the match. Jody had his usual tenacious  performance, passing with style and accuracy. Eddie didn’t give up fighting for the ball after we had scored  8 goals, winning the ball and continuous passing. Bongo’s aggressive tackling and assists were very noticable. Moylan and Jacks commanding of the defence and area in front of them, winning the ball then passing was very good. Chris, our newcomer scored 2 goals and harried the opposition. He will undoubtedly gain many man of the match votes in the future. Jesse scored an incredible goal which was preceded by a very good team passing move.

Jasper and Ash both put a very good shift in the right hand side.

It was difficult to choose as we controlled the game but Steve Taylor won it for me for not only partnering Bongo with compliment but for his sublime hatrick.

Angelo had nothing to do. He’ll get his six quids worth in November when we play Bryan Munich.

“I move into the spaces other people have just evacuated.” – Bridges 21/10/12

I think that’s called stalking Ed.

Indoor Cricket Results

The story of this weeks game starts with, as you might have noticed on the email list, the search for extra players. At one point 2 players short thankfully we were able to hand indoor debuts to Alfie and Neil. With Stroddy also playing his first game of the year we had a side lacking in experience. But given our run of 3 defeats in a row maybe a little fresh enthusiasm was what we needed.
Rob lost the toss and the opposition put us in to bat for the first time this season. Tom and Dave made a great start, Dave retiring for the second game running and Tom hitting 3 6’s in an over on the way to exactly 25 and out. Our running was a feature of the innings. At times magnificent, like when RT1 was knocking the ball straight back to the bowler and still managing to win the race to the other end and at times as dodgy as some of our dancing on Saturday night. With cameos from RT2, Alfie and RT1 supporting our opening pair we amassed a more than respectable total of 139.
Now we just had to bowl sensibly but with 3 out of our 5 regular bowlers absent it was by no means a done deal. The Robs opened the bowling and kept it tight. The new enthusiasm mentioned earlier was especially abundant in Stroddy at midwicket (well the indoor equivalent of midwicket) making all the right sort of encouraging noises. He was called into action in the second over and with a nifty pick up and throw effected a very professional looking run out. Our fielding in general was stellar with Justin getting a similar run out and Dave saving upwards of 15 runs all by himself with some heroic diving and sliding along the back wall.
After the two Robs had bowled 2 each we turned to the debutants Alfie and Stroddy, luckliy they made it look easy, Alfie extracting some scary bounce and Stroddy getting two wickets (including Tom’s first indoor stumping). Then Neil and Justin were given a go with Justin getting a wicket. By this point the opponents were well behind ther required rate and wickets were tumbling. By the time the Rob’s were brought back the game was almost over but there were still bonus points up for grabs and RT1 bowled a great last over picking up a wicket and conceding very few runs. In the end they reached around 85.
A comprehensive victory, much less funny but a lot more fun. So who wants a go next week then? RT1 and Dave are away so there are spots up for grabs. Answers on a postcard to the usual address (or an email would do).

Netaball report thus:

A cracking game this morning, with an 18-16 victory for the Div 11 team against Wired. The teams were evenly matched at half time, with just a goal between us, but we pulled away in the third quarter with some well-choreographed attacks and conceded only one goal. Our defence kept Wired at bay in the last quarter and we finished the match two up. Rachel was awarded player of the match by Wired and wingers Yo and Holly tied the player vote from us, for excellent centre court support. Thanks to Em B for coming to score, Leela for coaching, and everyone for great, tenacious play!

Awesome game of wetball today by the 6’s who were 11 down at half time but put in a decent second half to just lose 31 -32 to Doves. Although, due to a timer issue, it should have been a draw! We played through heavy rain and hail but we loved it. Well done our Vernie who got player from them and Hells Bells from us for cracking shooting x
