Not Quite Blind Anymore
Remember is you want in contact Phil G.
Principal photography begins today on Flying Blind, the third film to be made in Bristol under iFeatures, South West Screen’s groundbreaking micro-budget filmmaking scheme.
An exciting cast of multinational talent includes Helen McCrory (recently announced in the new James Bond film Skyfall, also Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince as Narcissa Malfoy and Mrs Bean in Fantastic Mr Fox), Kenneth Cranham (Hot Fuzz, Valkyrie), French-Algerian Najib Oudghiri (Rendition) and Australian Tristan Gemmill (Casualty).
Flying Blind is headed up by young Polish director Kasia Klimkiewicz, whose short film, Hanoi Warsaw, won the 2010 European Film Award for Best Short. It is produced by Alison Sterling of Ignition Films, who co-produced the BAFTA-nominated short film Turning, which screened at over 20 other international festivals.
The screenplay credit is shared by Naomi Wallace (Lawn Dogs, The War Boys), Bruce McLeod (The War Boys), and Bristol-based writer Caroline Harrington (Radio 4 adaptation Beyond Black). Behind the camera is Polish Director of Photography Andrzej Wojciechowski, Kasia’s long time collaborator, and DoP on Hanoi-Warsaw.
Flying Blind is a passionate post 9/11 love story that confronts cultural, racial and sexual taboos. It tells the story of an impossible love: an older woman with a younger man, in a world where security is paramount and nothing is quite what it seems.
Frankie works for a major aerospace manufacturer, designing surveillance drones for the military. She’s at the top of her game and in total control of her life. When she meets Kahil, a French-Algerian student, much younger than her, she embarks on a passionate affair and for the first time in her life she utterly, thrillingly, loses control. One morning, when she arrives for work, she’s detained by security and told that Kahil may not be quite what he seems. She discovers that she has unwittingly crossed a line from control and security, into a nightmare world of suspicion and accusation. She now realises how little she knows of this man, yet her love for him proves stronger than her anger and mistrust, and she tries to find a way to protect her lover. Finally she discovers to her cost that betrayal always comes from those closest to us.
An Ignition Pictures/iFeatures production, Flying Blind is a South West Screen and BBC Films presentation in association with Matador Pictures, Cinema Six, Regent Capital and City of Bristol. Content Media Corporation plc is handling worldwide sales.
Producer Alison Sterling, of Ignition Films, said: “It’s been a long journey to get to where we are today and a steep learning curve, and I am so pleased that the project will now be realised. Our talented cast and crew are bringing Kasia’s cinematic vision to life, for this script which we hope has passion, tension and beauty.”
iFeatures Executive Producer Chris Moll said: “This shoot has a real international flavour, and demonstrates our commitment to forging collaborations between emerging talent from different countries. I look forward to seeing the team make their mark with this microbudget, which boasts a really exciting multinational cast.
“As with all the iFeatures movies, Bristol itself is also a leading character. The film will strongly feature the city’s glorious contrasts, from Georgian splendour to gritty inner-city suburbs bisected by a motorway, flyover all excitingly re-interpreted through Kasia and Andrzej’s lenses.”
Flying Blind commences principal photography today (7 November). It will be a heavily location-based shoot, utilising many different facets of Bristol including Clifton, the Downs, the Harbourside, Easton, Stokes Croft, and the city centre. The Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton will double for the Bristol Concorde museum and the manufacturing floor of the Airbus manufacturing plant at Filton where the lead character Frankie works.
South West Screen’s iFeatures scheme, backed by BBC Films, Matador Pictures and Bristol City Council, was launched in October 2009 with the aim of providing a pathway to features for the city’s most outstanding creative talent as well attracting some of the best emerging filmmakers from across the UK and Europe to the city of Bristol. Three films were greenlit in November 2010, and Flying Blind is the third feature to move into production. The first, In the Dark Half, received its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London last month. The second film, Eight Minutes Idle, is currently in post-production

Extra Work Update
Hi Cowfolk
For those of you not already aware, the Cowboys were aproached last week to provide a team of 11 men to play as extras in a film called Flying Blind. Details of the film are still quite vague but it’s about an Algerian immigrant living in Easton. Filming is currently planned for 30th of November (but liable to change by a day or two) somewhere in Easton, they are looking for a cultrally diverse team and apprently they want the scene to be quite serious which is why they want to use a real team instead of just extras (they aint seen us play yet…) It was decided that all funds raised from this would go to help pay for next years tournament. They have asked to meet us so will be popping by at about 7.30 tomorrow night at ultras and downs league training in speedwell.
So – any of you budding film stars out there who would be interested in appearing whilst helping out with the tournament fundraising either be at training tomorrow or let me know your keen.
cheers
Phil G

The Sundays were beaten 2-4 by Beaufort who have now done the double over us this season. Because the league has so few teams it is possible that they can do the triple over us in February.

The Xtra Factor?
The Webgimp recently received an email that said:
My name is Emma Hanson and i’m working as a crowd assistant director on a new feature film being shot in bristol called Flying Blind. This film aims to showcase the talent there is to offer in Bristol from it’s aviation industry to it’s cultural diversity.
I am looking for a football team to play a couple of games in one of the scenes in the film and instead of putting together a team from extras, I’d love to be able to use a real team and was wondering if you guys could help me out! The film should be shown in Cinemas in the Uk and will go to festivals all over the world. We can offer pay to the guys who come and play or we can make a donation in their name to the teams. We aim to shoot the football scene on Tuesday 29th of November in Bristol.
How exciting. So exciting in fact that Phil Goldsmith as been hastily elected as a captain to put together a team in order to try and raise some readies for the 2012 coffers tournament. If you would like to take part and are available, maybe on a weekday, get in contact.

The Indore Cricket Team lost to Frampton, Ev reports thus:
Frampton batted first and got off to a flyer – 50ish off the first 3 overs. Good bowling from Tall Dave tied them down and wickets began to fall as Frampton attempted to break the shackles. Some difficult chances were spilled and RT2 showed insane committment, diving for one catch from his own bowling and hitting the floorboards with such force that the bails, and keeper Tinx were propelled into the air at the other end of the gym.
Frampton rallied in the final overs and ended up with 145 from their 12.
Cowboys never got near. With 3 batsman succumbing to crafty slower balls (surely illegal/immoral?) and hitting the roof, and 2 run outs and a stumping (Iggy swears he was in), only Tall Dave put up any real resistance. Coming in at the bottom of the order he played some lovely strokes and top scored with 20ish. Cowboys all out for about 60.

Bristol Palestine Film Festival
Just look at what Dave O has gone and done, he has only gone and organised a film festival!
The Bristol Palestine Film Festival is running from 1st – 10th December at The Watershed, The Arnolfini, The Cube and Hamilton House. This festival includes a film by a certain Jesse Tate (of this parish) entitled “Over The Wall”:
this engaging documentary follows the endeavours of Bristol-based sports team Easton Cowboys as they return to the West Bank for a second time. The film provides an insight into the realities of the occupation as seen by Palestinian and Israeli people and explores how football can build connections between communities across the world.
Also of interest is a talk by Honey Thaljieh, the captain of the Palestine women’s football team:
After years of playing football with the boys but without a team to call her own, Honey Thaljieh spearheaded the effort to start the women’s team in 2003, and remains the side’s captain to this day. Honey will share the joys of football in Palestine, whilst touching upon the social, cultural and political hurdles that her and her team mates have faced in their bid to become a recognised team.
Why not visit the Bristol Palestine Film Festival’s wonderful new website.
