The Saturday Team lost to Wrington by 7 wickets.

This was one of our home matches that was away, that is it was played on the top pitch at Fry’s “The Home of Turkish Delight”, unfortunately Turks-U-Like were right out cricketers leaving the Cowboys with two scousers, a Welshman, a Scot, a Spaniard Kicker and Eddy Bridges. The opposition arrived with a young bloke with a healthy hue, big shoulders and a suspiciously confident manner, although it has to be said he did not have the look of a man who knows what it is like to be taken up the Dardanelles nor indeed the Bosphorus. In the absence of our glorious and beloved leader, Gibbo took the toss and won it, we elected to bat. (more…)

Cricket Report from Mondiali Antirazzisti 2010

Posted by on Jul 12, 2010 in Results/Reports, Tours/Tournaments | 0 comments

DC1 reports thus:

Played 2 lost 2 innit, although we did improve – from 41 allout in the first game (Imola Srilankans) to 42 all out in the second (ModenaPakistanis). Fortunately the Mondiai Antirazzisti provides a sporting arenawhere participating is truly more important than winning. With only 4Cowboys/girls there to play cricket we were even less likely to compete at thisvery unfamiliar form of the game than we’ve been in previous years.Temperatures were in the high 30s, and we got great support from Cowboy footballersWill and Chalky, who played both games, and persuaded Corin to battle his hangoverand take the field. A stray spectator, Imran, made the eight for a team in thefirst game and his pals Imran and Shabbaz played for us in the second match.

Did we have any highlights? Bill won’t forget his 6 overextra cover in a hurry, Amanda was delighted with three 4s in her 15, Anny willbe telling you all about her 2 not out and we’re expecting Chalky to startcoming to nets. In the end, we’re playing cricket, but not as we know it andsomething very strange would have to happen for us to turn over sides who playthis way all the time.

The guy organizing the cricket was Eduardo, who plays forthe Italian national team. He provided the crucial insight when he pointed outthat, worldwide, more people play tape-ball ‘street’ cricket than ever get toplay with a hard red ball in whites on a proper pitch. Our own Kalu will tellyou that the first time he played with a hard ball was when he came to theCowboys. These guys are looking for 90 plus runs from their 8 overs . It’s ashortened pitch, and the bowlers bowl to hit the stumps, as fast as possible, getting wickets from a swing and miss or caught on the boundary, which is whereall the fielders are. When there are evenly matched teams the games are fastand furious and thrilling to watch. No pads or gloves, and lightweight batswith a prominent ‘scoop’ like you see in pictures from olden days.

The Mondiali Antirazzisti is a fantastic event, & allEaston Cowboys & Girls should make the pilgrimage. It is primarily afootball frenzy, with something like 200 teams competing, coming from all overthe World. With a bit of luck going their way the Easton Cowboys football teammight have progressed beyond their group stage, but the fortune andhalf-chances went the wrong way for them at crucial times. In past years theCowboys/girls have performed strongly in the Mondiali basketball tournament. The partying at Mondiali is exceptional – a dynamic combination of footballterrace chanting, naval distress flares and smoke bombs, soundtrack provided bylive ska/punk bands.

The Saturday Cricket Team lost to Oldfield Park by 7 runs.

After a top of the table clash last week beating bottom of the table this week should have been a stole in the Oldfield Park but, like Ev the night before we were mugged while not paying full attention. When we arrived at Frenchay there were two strips laid out before us; one was flat and light brown like a test match wicket, the other was lumpy and green. We elected for the lumpy green one, the end strip at Frenchay, not for the faint hearted.

Oldfield won the toss and elected to bat. We elected to unleash Budge and Dutch. Budge opened and after 8 overs emerged with 2 wickets for 14 runs. Dutch opened the bowling from the other end and emerged with an unprecedented 5 wides in his first over but finished on 4 wickets for 27. The Cloggmiester got huge amounts of bounce out of the lumpy green, indeed he tonked one of the foe’s openers on the head, “I hate having to wear a helmet” said the dazed and confused batsman. Rob got 2 wickets for 30 and had a huge argument with the umpire about LBW, angles and basic trigonometry.  On a hot day and without Kalu in the side the bowling had been an unremitting assault of pace, grumpiness and aggression which left the foe looking somewhat shell shocked.

At tea we were more or less pleased with the 115 all out from 35.2 overs to which we restricted them, after all we know that Frenchay is a good 200 pitch even when a little wet. So what went wrong at the tea interval? Was it Angelo’s amazing spread with rejuvenating juices, detox alfalfa salad and life affirming energy wraps? Was it the choice of the complacence quiche rather than the humble pie? Was it Germany beating Argentina 4-0 that provided inspiration? Who knows? (more…)

The Cowboys Friendly XI beat (in a friendly fashion Long Ashton) Ev reports thus:

Having watched Wales beat Slovenia in the back garden of the plough, a crack squad of merry men departed for Winford to play Long Ashton CC.

In the shrivelled, nuggetlike remains of skipper Evs brain, the thought of revenge was uppermost, cowboys having been beaten comfortably by LA a few weeks back. Full details of the match are inexplicably hazy, though some vague memories did form:

It was hot. We won the toss, elected to bat and scored somewhere in the region of 130 for approximately 8 wickets. Ev somehow managed to get 30 odd, and Iggy and Andy Chester scored some runs.

LA were stifled in their reply by great opening spells from Trev (this week out of a GK Chesterton novel) and Steve O. This set up the victory. All other cowboy bowlers did well, and there were a couple of runouts. The last LA batsman was dismissed in the final over with the score still in the nineties, vengeance was ours.

Man of the Match – Roger. singlehandedly won the game by bowling the bloke who used to play for Surrey.

Cider Moment – Roger. bowling the bloke who used to play for surrey.

NB – although the above is based on a true story, some names and events have been made up.

The Saturday Cricket Team beat Keynsham 3rd XI by 28 runs and are now top of the league.

According to the kinzy report, Every average man you know, Much prefers his lovey dovey to court, When the temperature is low, But when the thermometer goes way up, And the weather is sizzling hot, Mr. Pants for romance is not, Because it’s too darn hot, It’s too darn hot. (more…)

Community Day

Hello there folks. A few local residents involved with the Easton For Everyone community safety / anti mugging campaign are organising an event at ECC on July 17th. We plan to make it a proper community social event and also hope to raise some funds for the work of Easton For Everyone.

Here’s what we’re planning:

Showing films exploring issues of gangs, youth culture and community safety and solidarity.

A street awareness and self defence workshop.

Street art and games.

A 5 a side football tournament for young people.

An evening meal to raise funds.

We also hope to have a speaker from the Easton based gang awareness project.

So, we were wondering if this is something that the Cowboys and Cowgirls feel you could get involved with.

Specifically, we’d really appreciate help in organising the football, as your club clearly has the experience necessary.

This was posted to the messageboard:

Dear Cowfolk,

On Saturday 3rd July I am setting off on a cycle tour from Seaton (Devon) to Scarborough. This forms a two week section of thegreattour; a cycle tour around the coast of England, Scotland and Wales. I will be cycling an average of 60 miles a day with up to 2,100m of ascents in any one day. Those of you who know me may realise that this is no trifling matter for someone of my size and spinal deformities.

I am raising money for the Prostate Cancer Charity. My Grandad died of it, my Dad has been successfully treated for it and I am at high risk of contracting it.

If any of you dear folk fancy sponsoring me then you can follow the link below to my money giving web page

Loving the cricket reports, perhaps less runs akimbo and more stumps akimbo though!

all the best,

Easton Cowboys Friendly XI lost to Wrington Yute. Yet another master-class in sports writing, this time by Alan. He reports thus:

cowboys won toss and put the yute into bat. they started rather hesitantly, never looking entirely comfortable despite being confronted by some friendly bowling. as we have no score-sheet for game, further details will have to be vaguely nutshelled. here goes . . .

everyone got a bowl (except angelo at his own request). some were better than others. 2 individuals were granted 3 overs : eddie bridges – having arrived late and nursing a broken toe – bowled some nice balls and some not so nice balls. jimmy pitcher attemptied to crystallise his swinger credentials, and almost did. other notable bowling was provided by trevor forrest. upon donning the whites he miraculously transforms into a living anachronism, resembling a gentleman from crickets long gone golden age. evan “elpus” gibbon bowled some mind boggling spin. it has since been reported that the “fizz” from the seam was heard in a neighbouring county.

they ended up with 100-odd for a finite number of wickets.

the cowboys spell with the willow had its ups and downs. starting with a down. reg got bowled first ball. he later compared this to a boxer being knocked out in the first round. thats just gots to hoit!! alana cuthill struggled to get bat on ball. angelo silenced the continual rabble of the excitable yute by blatting the ball into a nearby tennis court. with 6 or so overs remaining they attempted to fulfill the 7 or so required run rate per over, but alas the consistently tight bowling served up by the infuriating little blighters proved a bridge too far.

cowboys lost by about 5 runs.

other notable points of interest : duncans lad fenn played his very first game for the cowboys. he fielded gracefully with confidence. he is giving a masterclass at gordon road, 1900hrs 29th june 2010. another interesting occurence was the greco-roman wrestling match which spontaneously came about as the ball, having left the batsmans wand, travelled between ben salt at 1st slip and angelo keeping. ben came out on top clutching said ball as a blacksmith does his hammer – forcefully, with aplumb. nobody was injured in the flailing maelstrom.

all in all, a very pleasant evenings cricket in the splendid north somerset countryside was had by all. well, apart from poor old reg who disappeared shortly after being dismissed for a golden. doh!

The Cricket Team Cup Team lost to Winford Village CC 1st XI by 20 runs. Ev reports thus:

Can’t remember who won the toss on a warm sunny evening at Winford but they batted first. We took an early wicket and, considering how tiny Winfords ground is, did well to restrict for the first 8 overs. Then they opened up, or rather one of them did. He went on to make 111 not out (though we dropped him 3 times), smacking the ball into the surrounding fields at will as they put together a mammoth 190 for 3 from their 20 overs.

A quick turnaround and Simon and Kalu got us off to a decent start, and then, at the fall of the first wicket, Justin strolled in at number 3 and everything went weird. Haring between the wickets, screaming “yes!” like some crazed suicide batsman, regardless of where the ball went, Justin simultaneously scored freely and ran out Evan and Bolts without them even facing a ball.

By the time we got to the 16th over Justin was shot to pieces. Hanging from his bat between deliveries, panting, he was too tired to swing the bat. And despite instructions from our skipper to run himself out, couldn’t find the energy even for this.

Eventually, weak and confused, stranded in the middle of the wicket, seemingly having forgotten which way he was running J was run out for 41 (redeeming himself by making our top score).

Dunc, Ange and Ian H all chipped in as well, and the cowboys made a respectable 170 for 9 in the end.

See the full scorecard here.

20/20 Friendly Vs GCCE away at Tuffley Park, Gloucester. Ev reports:

GCCE (Gloucestershire County Council Environment) won the toss and duly inserted us. In intermittent drizzle, on a very slow pudding of a wicket, DC1 and SteveO both made it to 25 and retired. After that we struggled to score, with only Evan (18) and Ollie (12) making it to double figures.

GCCE overhauled our total of 119 fairly comfortably. SteveO, DC1, Trev and Bill were the pick of the bowlers.
