The Saturday Cricket Team beat Midsomer Norton by 66 runs, Ev reports thus:

The Webgimp became the first cowboy to score a hundred since 2004 and only the seventh since time began, with a superb knock of 101 at Frenchay against Midsomer Norton. Grover’s maiden century included 1 magnificent 6 and an ambulance was on standby through the 80’s and 90’s as he turned various strange colours. Ben Preece made 57 (and a frittata), SteveO 30, and Simon Strange an express 25 in our total of 272 for 3. Midsomer Norton could only make 206 for 9 in their 40 overs with Roger taking 3 wickets. The Saturday team are now joint top of the division.

Man of the match – Richie Grove

Cider moment – Gretch nearly removing Rob T’s kidney with the ball, attempting a run out.

The Sunday 1st Cricket Team beat Blackwell Flax Bourton (and his friends) by 46 runs. Neil reports thus:

Last two remaining unbeaten records in division 4 were put on the line. Backwell won toss, put Cowboys in to bat. Cowboys put on 211 in their 40 overs. Backwell struggled to 165 all out in 38.5 overs. No one scored a century.

Funk it, am too knackered to write more…

… but the scorecard says Aran hit 45 and Harry hit 59 (his third 50 of the season and now averaging 58.7). Sadat bowled 7 overs 2 maidens 18 for 4, Sayedajan bowled 8 overs, 28 for 2 and Stratto bowled 8 overs 2 maidens 28 for 1.

See the full scorecard.

The Sunday 2nd Cricket Team lost to Portway by 8 wickets.

On a day with people pulling out due to illness and with the injury list growing DC2 arrived late and severely under the weather. In fact several of the team arrived late because in all the confusion nobody knew where the ground was. The Cowboys batted first and were alll out for 113 in 39.5 overs, which was something of a recovery considering that they were on 25 for 5 at 16 overs. Ben C top scored with 18 and DC2 and Brian but on 19 for the last wicket with a combined age of 120 years.

BFB knocked them off in 16.5 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. Man of the match was Hidaya who bowled one of Portway’s openers with the first ball of the innings, he continued to bowl magnificently finishing with 8 overs, 1 maiden, 23 for 1.

Cider moment was the “DC2 No Smoking incident”

A Brief Word About The Recent Palestine Tour

Posted by on Jun 7, 2010 in Results/Reports, Tours/Tournaments | 0 comments

By Will

Yes, it happened. At the beginning of May a group of fifteen Cowboys and Cowgirls ventured out again to the West Bank for another ten days of football (and volleyball), fun and falafel. There were a few differences to our last visit in April 2007. This time we mostly played in small villages, as opposed to the large centres of population like Bethlehem; we played in Israel itself, against the Anarchists Against the Wall group from Tel Aviv and we also had a more disparate group, made up of some old faces, a few new faces and a couple of our comrades from Republica.

But everything went according to plan. We all got into the country and rendezvous-ed at the agreed point. Even on the football pitch things went, well, better than expected, considering our wafer-thin squad.

It was as gruelling as last time – nine games in eight days – and everyone will have their own personal highlights. Who can forget our whistle stop VIP tour of Palestine’s leading fun fair, Megaland? Or our driver Shaher (aka ‘The General’) and his habit of inflicting the Backstreet Boys’ classic ‘Show Me The Reason For Being Lonely’ on us at regular intervals?

Then there was our final game in Traffur. As the tour bus wended its way down to the foot of the village where a floodlit stadium was carved out of a disused quarry, we were besieged by scores of kids. As we went in at half time all we could hear were hundreds of young voices, all chanting in unison ‘EASTON COW-BOYS! EASTON COW-BOYS!’ None of us will ever forget it.

Along the way we learned a hell of a lot about the realities of the occupation. We also donated over £1000 to the building of a school in the community of Khallet Zakariya that is surrounded on all sides by illegal Israeli settlements. And we confirmed the Cowboys twinning arrangement with Tulkarem Sports Club. There is already talk of maybe getting a Palestinian side over here next year.

On top of this, there is also a cinematic masterpiece in the offing. Jesse took a camera out and is currently working on a film of the tour that will see light of day before too long. More news on that soon.

Well done to everyone who contributed to making this happen. Hopefully we can do it all again at some point in the none-too-distant future..

Cricket Friendly vs Long Ashton:

On a fine and sunny evening we won the toss and chose to bat. Things were all going lovely at first ,with opener Ian Higgins timing it beautifully and making 40 and Evan hitting a quick 28. After 11 overs the cowboys were nicely placed at 90 for 3 and a big total seemed inevitable. However, committing the cardinal sin of forgetting to “Remember Kilmersden” the cowboys collapsed in classical fashion, losing the next 7 wickets for just 19 runs. In reply Long Ashton knocked the runs off in 18 overs despite a fine display of legspin bowling by Kalu who took 3 for not very many and some great wicket keeping from Simon Wilson, who hadn’t kept for years.

The Saturday Team game vrs. GWR Shuntters was cancelled.

30/05/2010

The Sunday Cricket 1sts won via a walkover against Stratton-on-the-Foss who could not raise a team.

The 2nds did not have a game.

Cricket Friendly vs Old England

The Old E won by 24 runs in a veritable runfest at Frenchay, where 534 runs were scored in total. Old E won the toss and batted first. After a couple of early wickets fell there came two lads to the crease, both named Irfan, who battered the ball to every corner of the ground without mercy. It didn’t help that we dropped them 4 times. Irfan 1 retired on 50 odd, seemingly bored. Irfan 2, clearly enjoying the carnage, continued to gorge himself until, fat with runs, he retired on reaching his hundred. With the big hitters safely gone Evan brought himself back on and took 5 wickets. Ben Preece took an excellent one handed catch with a cry of “oh shit!”. Old E finally declared on 279 for 8.

In reply the cowboys got to 255 for 8 mostly thanks to a partnership of 90 odd between Harry (55 not out) and Alan (48 not out) with Evan (39) and Simon W(30) chipping in. Harry won man of the match and Alans suspect ladies trousers won the cider moment.

Freiburg and Italy tournaments

Kampfende Herzen from Freiburg hold a small tournament near the black mountains which goes from the 2nd of July to the 4th, it is a lovely place, good pitch and 11-a-side and you can camp next to the pitch.

Modiali antirazzisti in bologna, Italy. 7th-11th of July.

This one is a very big 7-a-side tournament with a big music stage, an outdoor dj/dance area, a music/beer tent and two large beer tents with a variety of food and stalls. It brings teams and fans of anti racist and anti fascist football from all around the world together for a great weekend and it won’t kill your funds! Also, I have been the past 3 years and everytime I have enjoyed the 35 degree heat on top of the fantastic time i’ve had there.

If you are interested and want to put your name down so I can get numbers or even if you want more information or help with travel options please contact me!

Tel: 07742762783 email: Kelly_27_db@hotmail.com or even on facebook (Jack Kelly)

There is also the option of doing both tours as one holiday as both locations are within reasonable driving distance of each other and the 3 days inbetween give you a chance to explore the alps, Italian coast and some great cities.

There are return flights as cheap as £35, car hire will work out very reasonable with a full car and everything else is as cheap or as expensive as you decide really.

Please contact me of you are even the slightest bit interested, the more the merrier!

Thanks and much love,

Jack Kelly

Three Is The Magic Number (Cometh The Hour, Cometh DC2 Part 2)

Posted by on May 24, 2010 in Results/Reports | 0 comments

The other weekend the Cowboys and Cowgirls did indeed bring home the double from Hamburg. There was some confusion due to the way the tournament is organised, the Cowgirls finished 15th but because they were the top placed women’s team they won the women’s tournament.

For the first time ever all three cricket teams won on the same weekend. FEAR US!

The Saturday Cricket Team beat Old Bristolians Westbury 4ths by 4 wickets at home.

On a day when nobody gave a toss Uberpops lost it, that is we did not really mind who batted first. As it turned out OB elected to bat and we unleashed Budge and Garner who delivered an assured start. Budge bolwed 8 overs ,  1 maiden, 2 wickets for 23 runs  and Garner, who’s bottom was unusually quite (perhaps due to the presence of his “Special Lady”), bolwed 5.4 overs,  1 wicket for 16 runs. Roger then ambled up to the crease, handed his sweaty cap to the umpire and destroyed their middle order, clean bowling 4 batsmen for 30 runs. Not to be outdone Dutch took 3 wickets for 16 runs.  Thus the foe was all out for 146 in 37.4 overs. (more…)

The Suburbans beat Finshponds Old Boys Res 8-0 so they finished third in the 1st Division. Played 28, won 16, drew 7, lost 5, for 88, against 43, points 55.

15/05/2010

The Saturday Cricket Team beat Old Park by 6 wickets in 29.5 over. See the full scorecard.

Uberpops got us off to a good start by managing to win the toss and we put Old Park in to bat. Budge and Garner seem to have swapped souls with Garner bowling 8 overs for just 5 runs but taking no wickets. Ev then weighed in with 4 wickets for 24 runs and with a confident call caught an enormous skyer off his own bowling. With tight bowling from Dutch and Roger at the death Old Park were kept to 127 for 9 off their 40 overs.

The Cowboys batting got off to a shaky start as Old Park opened with 2 genuinely quick bowlers slumping to 39 for 4. The innings was stabilised by Ben who got 35 not out and Dutch who hit 59 not out, including a 6 that almost made it out of the gate of the chocolate factory.

Ben won man of the match and Ev won cider moment for his skyer caught and bowled.

16/05/2010

The Sunday 1st Cricket Team were rained off.

The Sunday 2nd Cricket Team lost to Carson & Mangotfield by 137 runs. See the full scorecard here.

Berent took 3 wickets for 47 runs as C&M reached 263 for 8 with their opener hitting 137. In reply the Cowboys reached 126 all out in 31.4 overs. Bernet hit 50.

Over the weekend the Cowboys & Cowgirls also won the St. Pauli tournament in Hamburg.

The cricketers played the footballers (in the form of the Angelo Bordi Memorial XI) at the game of cricket. The result depends upon who you ask. Evan says that the Cricket Team won but Quiffey insists that PeeWee demanded a recount of his runs and that the match was a tie. Both Ev and Quiffey agree that the catch with which Quiffey got Ev out was most fine.

06/05/2010

The Suburbans beat Hengrove Athletic 5-3 (home). If they beat Fishponds tonight (Tuesday) they will have finished 3rd in Division 1.

09/05/2010

The Saturday Cricket Team beat Wrington away in the pissing rain by 43 runs.

Stevo lost the toss again and on what is normally a dodgy pitch he and Ben (Blue Eyes) fell to the worst shooters that anyone can remember. Enter Gary to play the perfect innings. Staying at 3 an over until the last ten Gary propelled the Cowboys to 180 for 8, getting 84 with 25 coming from the last over. In fact the last over went thus: 6, dot, 6, 4, the bowler then tried to get a little sympathy by faking a hamstring injury then bowled a no ball that went for 2, 2, 4. After very tight bowling by Joe and Garner, Roger made up for getting a golden duck by taking 5 wickets for 32. Wrington were all out for 137 in 36 overs. Both Roger and Gary did the honourable thing and bought jugs.

Gary won man of the match and 2 sixes and a hamstring won the cider moment.

See the full scorecard here.

Sunday 1st Team beat Bath Exiles. Ned Bolt reports thus:

The Sunday 1sts season got under way with a tension-filled game at Frenchay versus Bath Exiles. The Cowboys were rewarded with a fine win in a game that see-sawed between the two teams. Cowboys batted first and managed 198 all out in 37.2 overs, the Exiles reply saw them reach 186 all out in 36.5 overs. Debutant: Sayed produced the Cider Moment with his bowling at the death, Harry was man of the match with 51 runs and 3 for 22, Bolts was ‘absolutely drained’. Harry did not buy a jug because he is too young.

See the full scorecard here.

Sunday 2ndt Team lost to Brislington. DC2 reports thus:

Having lost the toss and been forced to bat, we batted well. Angelo top scoring with 75 in an innings of sensibly applied grace and power, such that even the scorers missed the 50 “milestone” until another over had passed. Grant batted well with him, ending on 30? not out in a partnership of 120+ for the 5th?, and we made 194 for 6? in our allotted span.

Despite 3 early wickets when our opening bowlers Ben (2) and Sadat (1) had adjusted to either running uphill or downhill!!, one of their old sturdy 1st teamers(100+n.o.) came in, and together with a dangerously innocuous looking youth knocked off the runs despite the best efforts all the bowlers used on the unresponsive pitch. Wayne was our most economcal bowler and took a great slip catch, and Angelo hit the biggest 6 of the game. Angelo did not buy a jug because not enough of his team mates made it back to the pub to enjoy it.

MoM – Angelo Cider/Cyder moment – Wayne’s stunning slip catch.

See the full scorecard here.

Dear friends old and new,

“Welcome aboard …”

Here’s some more information about the big event of the summer, Yorkshire’s Alternative Word Cup 2010, which is now officially called “Republica Internationale’s Flying Circus” (because it’s right next to a very active little airfield with lots of pleasure flights by small aeroplanes, gliders, etc).

This site for 3 days of football and music is near the small village of Rufforth, just 8 kilometres from the beautiful ancient city of York) , from Friday 6 August until Sunday 8 August . We have teams from at least seven countries confirmed so far – Belgium, Brazil (yes ! all the way from Sao Paolo Brazil !) , England, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Scotland. (more…)
